Speaking in a bilateral meeting at World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarter in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, WTO Director-General Robeto Cavatho Azevedo praised Cambodian Prime Hun Sen’s wise leadership on the accession to WTO which Cambodia received technical assistance of nearly $8 million as well as human resources building opportunities between 2010 to 2018.
Robeto informed Prime Minister Hun Sen that Cambodia was a least developed country but able to become a member of WTO; Cambodia today is recognized as the one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
Prime Minister thanked WTO for the support over the past 14 years since her membership in 2004 and said that Cambodia-WTO cooperation will be strengthened.
As Cambodia has served as the facilitator in term 2017-2018, Prime Minister hopes that in 2020, Cambodia will be in the WTO trilateral mechanism and continue to receive aids from WTO.
In the bilateral talks, the two also discussed in depth on the global trade war, particularly between the United States and China.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.
