On 5 November 2015, presiding over the inauguration of the Phase III Project to protect Phnom Penh from flooding and to rehabilitate drainage system by Japanese assistance, Samdech Techo Hun Sen reaffirmed the Mekong’s water level predicted to stay as low as 4.2 meters, compared to normally around 7 meters, is the foremost reason for cancellation of boat race event. Samdech Techo considered comments that cancellation of the event was for concern of protest by CNRP, by self-proclaimed analysts and opposition persons, are unacceptably outrageous.Samdech Techo stresses once again that even though the boat race event will not happen, people from countryside can come to Phnom Penh to enjoy other festivities. Famous artists and performers, Cambodian idols included, are invited to take part in festive shows. Budget earmarked for the boat race event, Samdech Techo reaffirmed, would be used instead for buying fuel to pump water into reservoirs for people’s irrigation of their rice fields./.
