In message greeting the 17th National Awareness Day of Mines on 24 February 2016, Samdech Techo Hun Sen reminded those living in areas prone to be affected by mines and UXOs to increase vigilance against possible accidents they could cause. Samdech stressed that while mines and UXOs could cause lethal tragedy to our people, they could also be obstacles to restoration and development of family livelihood and national economy. “The Royal Government considers mine action its 18th sustainable development goal and includes it in its rectangular strategy, which is now in its 24 years in 2016,” Samdech Techo affirmed. While continuing that Cambodia still suspects some 1,600 square kilometers of its territory are still under mines, Samdech Techo reasoned that de-mining alone would not provide required safety but raising people’s awareness of accidents caused by mines and UXOs by briefing them at homes, in community, sports activities, media, leaflets and educational curriculum, would help. Samdech Techo also expresses his thanks to development partners, national and international organizations, and mines action operators for taking parts actively with the Royal Government in clearing mines to reduce accidents, to increase safety level in our people’s lives and to help speed up restoration and development of national economy./.
