Over 50 countries in the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting summit (ASEM12) in Brussels, Belgium, have supported Cambodia to host the 13th Asia-Europe Summit in 2020, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen informed Cambodian people living and studying in Belgium on Friday night.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the summit does not mention any concerns over Cambodia, but support the Kingdom to host the 13th ASEM Summit.
The premier taunted that hosting the summit is not expected to receive any applause from the opposition, for they did not even congratulate Cambodian athletes bringing home medals.
ASEM Summit was held to strengthen cooperation between Asia and Europe, focusing on three pillars, including Political & Security Pillar, Economic & Financial Pillar, Social, Cultural & Educational Pillar. ASEM accounts for 50 percent of the world’s GDP, equivalent to 60 percent of the world’s population and 60 percent of global trade.
If the summit takes place as scheduled, it will be the first time for Cambodia to host such a large gathering of leaders from 53 partners, including the 30 European countries, 28 EU member states, Norway, Switzerland, 21 Asian countries, and the ASEAN Secretariat.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said that Cambodia is committed to ensure the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting goes smoothly and successfully as the other Asia Europe Summits. As chair of the Asia-Europe Meeting, Cambodia pledged to strengthen mutual beneficial partnerships among member countries to contribute to the promotion of peace and security, and to achieve 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development Goals.
