Cambodia has been unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict with Regulations for the Execution of the Convention 1954, according to the congratulatory message of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen released in his social media network this morning.
The election took place during the committee’s 11th meeting held at the UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, France on Dec. 8-9, 2016, it pointed out.
The chairmanship of this committee is a new achievement of Cambodia’s policy on the preservation and enhancement of the value of cultural heritage of mankind, which has been actively implemented by the Royal Government of Cambodia, and clearly shows the Kingdom’s more important and leading role on the international arena, especially in the fields of heritage and culture for humanity, underlined the message.
Until Oct. 13, 2016, it added, the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict has 127 States Parties, of which 104 are States Parties to the first protocol of May 14, 1954, and 69 to the second protocol of Mar. 26, 1999.
Cambodia ratified the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict on Dec. 17, 1954, after she got independence from France.
