Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has called on all relevant authorities to pay attention to the prevention of the spread of Zika virus.
The premier made the appeal while presiding over here this morning the official inauguration ceremony of Sunrise Japan Hospital Phnom Penh, the first private Japanese hospital in Cambodia.
In an effort to prevent this infectious disease, early this month, the Ministry of Health has installed thermal scanners at major border crossings and international airports to detect passengers infected by the Zika virus, after its outbreak in Singapore and other neighboring countries such as Thailand and Malaysia.
The ministry has also set up 155 as a hotline to report and question about Zika.
The Ministry of Health has also appealed to the public to work together to destroy mosquito shelters around their houses and be safe from mosquito bites. There is no case of Zika virus reported in Cambodia after a confirmed case in 2010.
According to the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.
