Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia will continue to provide assistance for development in Cambodia from 2019 onwards and that Cambodian’s debt to Russia will be transformed to investment in Cambodia, speaking in a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on 18 October 2018 in Brussels, Belgium, on the occasion of the 12th ASEM Summit.
Russian premier informed his Cambodian counterpart that in addition to providing technical assistance on the restoration of Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, Russia would like to assist in the repairs of Cambodia’s ancient temples, as many Russian tourists visited and expressed deep interest in Cambodia.
During the meeting, the two leaders talked intensively on strengthening the relations and cooperation between the two countries on various fields, including security, economy and trade.
Cambodia owed Russia approximately $1,500 million in the 1980s. Russia has agreed to eradicate 70% of the debt and the remaining is equivalent to $450 million.
